Kintradwell Hydro Scheme is a 100kW scheme that was built near Brora. The scheme was designed by Campbell of Doune and we were contracted to complete all Civil Engineering aspects of the scheme, which included:
- Constructing two In-River Water Intake complete with Header Tank.
- Installing 1300 metres of 355mm diameter HDPE pipework and 1400 metres of 350mm diameter ductile iron pipework, with 100 metres of head.
- Construct the Powerhouse sub-structure, complete with Tailrace and Headwall.
- Construct the reinforced concrete Pigging Chamber.
The scheme has been running extremely successfully for the client and is thought to continue to do so for many years. The water is passed through a Hydrorom Pelton Turbine, which generates the power for being sent back onto the National Grid.
Kintradwell was particularly challenging due to a long section of pipeline that required laid on the side of a very steep gorge. We achieved this with little disruption to the estate during the construction.
